The gentle slope compensating filter is used to compensate for size variations between fingers and toes which are thinner than the wrists and the back of the foot.

Because of a large difference in thickness (shoulder, knee in profile, etc.) or very different tissue densities (lungs and mediastinum), compensating filters make it possible to homogenise the amount of radiation arriving at the film in order to obtain a more regular density and to avoid making a shot on each part of the body segment.
